Murrabit is a modest river town, 305km from the state’s capital Melbourne.
The township of Murrabit was established as a railway station on the Kerang-Stony Crossing Border Railway in 1924.
The existence of the railway station made Murrabit an obvious place for shops and houses to cluster. The town was built two miles from the river, a stipulation set by the New South Wales Government as a condition of collaboration with the Border Railway Scheme.
The area is renowned for Murray Cod and Yellowbelly (Golden Perch) which prove a popular challenge to any angler.
The small country town is most famous for its down to earth, humble monthly country market. At dawn on the first Saturday of each month, the town comes to life when it hosts the Murrabit Country Market.
The market is in its 46th year of operation with the first market held in November 1977 when 19 stalls set up in front of the Murrabit Hall.
The market continues today as one of Victoria’s longest running country markets, held on the first Saturday of every month (including Easter Saturday), with stallholders filling up to 150 sites from across the state and across the borders of NSW and SA.
Wares from fresh home grown produce, woodenware, recycled iron, plants, craft, bric-a-brac, hardware, tools, fishing gear and clothing are there to delight the purchaser.
Aromas of freshly cooked barbecues and hot food fill the air and morning tea at the hall, consisting of cappuccinos, scones, sandwiches and sumptuous cakes is not to be missed. Live entertainment adds to the relaxed atmosphere and popular entertainers perform at each of the markets.
1. Cod Challenge
The Murrabit Cod Challenge is a catch and release fishing competition on the Murray River at Murrabit in March, targeting the mighty Murray Cod and Golden Perch. Camping is provided at the Murrabit Rec Reserve on the Friday and Saturday nights, with all meals catered for. So catch a weekend away with your mates and enjoy a fish on the famous Murray River, snag a Murray Cod and win some awesome prizes.
2. Golf
Murrabit Golf Course is a wonderful 12 hole, 73 par golf course. Murrabit Golf Club is a very friendly club that plays every Saturday afternoon from Easter and holds an annual tournament that is wholly contested from locals and golfers further afield.
3. Busy Bees
Busy Bees of Murrabit is operated by the Murrabit Promotions Committee, a not-for-profit community organisation. Opened in 2005, Busy Bees of Murrabit provides a central location to promote tourism, an outlet for the sale and display of locally produced arts and crafts, and of course an additional attraction for visitors to enjoy.
