Players up to the challenge

Cohuna

LAST Tuesday’s weather conditions were a challenge with a gusty side wind blowing most of the afternoon.

But good bowlers were up to the challenge with 28 players enjoying the two games of eight ends.

Winners were the team of Peter Van der Zan, Ken Hocking and Trevor Kirby. Trevor has been on the winner’s podium very often recently; great to see a newcomer to our club doing so well.

Social bowls has been changed to Wednesday for this week only to allow members to travel to Moama to support our Pennant teams in the midweek state final.

A huge achievement to reach state final level and we wish them every success.

Cohuna Golf played their state final of Saturday Pennant on the weekend and we wish them every success as well.

Pie and Soup at Cohuna was well attended last week with 18 teams and 54 bowlers. Winners were the team of Bluey Fletcher, Ian Coates and Ian Howard. Runners up were Peter and Rhonda Bibby and Linda McManus.

Pie and Soup this week is at Leitchville with hopefully a good turn out of bowlers.

Saturday Social Bowls commenced last Saturday with 18 players keen to have a roll. There were no two-game winners but the team of Trevor Kirby, Maurie Marnie and Rhonda Ballard accrued 32 points to take the honours for the day. Coming a close second with 30 points were the team of Brian Bowles, Ray Storey and Doug Marshall. There were no winners at Spin and Win so the pool jackpots for next week.

Cohuna Golf

SUNDAY evening saw the end of a big week in bowls, culminating in the State Pennant finals at Moama.

First things first, and Gunbower held their windup night earlier in the week, to which all our Gunny Golf bowlers were invited. Their legendary vote count saw 12 of our members attend, with Cheryle Baker, Noelene Brown and Dawn Miller in a three-way tie for best and fairest in third division. Congratulations to you all.

Earlier several of our members joined Gunbower in a practice game at Moama, with lunch afterwards. This was a great hit-out for the bowls following later in the week. Thanks Gunny for both invitations.

Onto Pie and Soup day at Cohuna in summer-like conditions, the winners being Bluey Fletcher, Ian Coates and recruit Ian Howard, with runners up Peter and Rhonda Bibby with Linda McManus. Pat Quinn’s side also had three wins. Leitchville is the venue for this week, Tony Cantwell taking names.

Our contingent of bowlers hit Moama on Friday afternoon for an extended practice session, both on and off the greens.

This paved the way for an 8.30am start of play on Saturday morning. All Golf players knuckled down, and grabbed Bairnsdale over the last couple of ends to win, then followed up with a big victory against Frankston.

The afternoon game was against the star-studded Moama team, and didn’t we give them a fright. Harrison Keely’s rink won by three, the other two losing after very competitive games. Sunday didn’t begin too well, only Jarred’s rink looking sharp as Stawell won by just three shots. However we finished on a high defeating a very good unit from Victoria (Ballarat) in the final match by over a dozen.

Well done to all players, managers Steve Brown and Peter Coates, along with the host of supporters who travelled across to provide lots of encouragement. As a matter of interest, Deer Park, who have as many poker machines as Moama, defeated them in the final with one big win, a narrow loss and a draw.

Kerang

OUR men’s section AGM was held last Wednesday. Thanks to our immediate past president Ross Frantz for his sterling work for the club during his presidency and all other members of the men’s section committee.

We welcome with enthusiasm the incoming president Damien Murray, vice-president Rod Pascoe and their committee of Ross Frantz, John Pay, Jason Brown, Kevin Teasdale, Allan Davies and Marshall Rosewall. The ladies section AGM will be held tomorrow at 1pm.

Black duck triples last Tuesday saw 42 players take to the greens to test their skills against a gusty breeze.

Jim McLeish, Bob McBain and Jenny Harrison proved invincible winning both games with a total of +30 to win the day.

Kevin Teasdale, Greg Tate and Reg Hipwell finished 8 up to take the second game prize.

I was thinking how low the odds of winning Tattslotto must be after the Black Duck Triples Jackpot remained unclaimed when +10 was drawn out.

The odds there were one in 61 and this week the prize sits at $927, surely it must be won soon. Names need to be in by 11am and play begins at 12.30pm today.

Time clicks down to the Bowls Victoria Over 60’s Championships in Mixed Pairs, Pairs and Singles events to be held later this month.

We will host visiting bowlers on May 20, 22, 23 and 24 at our club.

Shane will present the greens in excellent condition with 20 rinks in play.

Most Northern District Clubs will host some early rounds and all finals will be played at Barham on the following Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully the Autumn weather will be kind to all.

Kerang Golf

ANOTHER beautiful day of sunshine for our regular Thursday Social Bowls with a great turn out of 26 players.

The greens are running well and the warm weather sees plenty of happy bowlers enjoying the mild Autumn conditions.

After two games, the winners were Jimmy McLeish, Mari Miller and Craig Hicks and they received the major money.

Runners up were Frank Ritchie and Bryce McLeish who also won both their games, but two winning shots behind the winners. Encouragement chocolates to Howard McClelland, David Randall and visitor Ron Rawlins from Sale.

With a large contingent at the Pyramid Hill Seafood Day, and from reports, there were no podium finishes, not even in the raffles, our Sunday bowls only had a small group who had a game of “scroungers”. Coming out with the top score was Howard McClelland and, if there was an encouragement award, Kevin Chase would have won that prestigious prize. Social bowls is held each Thursday and Sunday, with names in by 12.45pm for a 1pm start. Everyone is welcome.

A few members will be heading off shortly on their annual pilgrimage to the warmer climates up north, so happy camping to all those lucky people. Recent birthday wishes to Jim Richards who celebrated his entry in to the “naughty” nineties and new Life Member Dale Spinks who is just three years Jim’s junior. Hope you both enjoyed your days.

The Bowls Victoria Over 60’s State Carnival is coming up and our club is hosting days on May 20, 22 and 24.

The schedule is Mixed Pairs on Monday, with five sections, commencing at 9am. On Wednesday, we host the Women’s Singles with 12 sections, again starting at 9am.

Friday, we will be hosting Men’s Pairs. If you can help, please let anyone of the committee members know of your availability, it will be a great chance to showcase our hospitality to a huge numbers of bowlers who have never been to our area.
