Across the Greens

KERANG GOLF

THE football season is drawing to a close and our bowlers are slowly returning from their winter holidays.

The action on the greens heats up this month with our club’s Opening Day, which is scheduled for Sunday, September 22 and our annual practice match against Lake Boga on the following Friday public holiday.

Members are asked to put their names on the sheet on the noticeboard, so as to let the match committee know of their playing intentions.

On Sunday, we had 15 players and a mixture of pairs and triples, who all had an enjoyable afternoon.

The only two-game winner was the Laurie Gray, Bernie Beck and Marlene Rawson combination, who finished 12 shots up, while the runners-up were Stuart Robinson (welcome back) and Trevor Linton, who had a win and a tie, with the chocolates going to Gary Borg, John Murphy and Noel Robertson.

Our Thursday social continues to be a popular event, with 22 players taking part last week.

The winners were Laurie Gray, Wayne Nevile and Ali Roach, who is a caravan visitor to Kerang Golf.

They won both their games and finished nine shots up, with the runners-up being Craig Hicks and Marlene Rawson, who also won both games, but by only four shots, so had to settle for second place, with the chocolates going to Neil Paul and Diane Harris.

As mentioned earlier, September is a busy month on the greens, but also off them as well, with the northern ditches having been concreted and the new ‘grass’ being put in place.

Thanks to the willing workers who have attended the working bees under the supervision of Alan Hird and Laurie Gray.

The next structural job on the agenda is the replacement of the shelters on the clubhouse side, so please watch this space for more information on this major improvement.

October will see the start of midweek and Saturday pennant competitions, and with all teams playing at home on the first Saturday, it is hoped to have our first Royal Night following a successful start to the season.

The Royal Hotel have again agreed to sponsor our best rink each Saturday with meal vouchers, as in previous years, with many thanks to Rob and Jo for their continued assistance of our club – it is very much appreciated.

Preliminary advice about our tournaments that are coming up, with the Claire Spinks Memorial Tournament (formerly the Peg Coad Day) to be held on Thursday, October 24 and the TerryWhite Chemist Triples, which will be held on Thursday, November 7.

Our major day, the cluBarham Star Tournament, is gazetted for Sunday, December 1, so keep these dates free so you can support our club.

Club event entry sheets are being prepared, with the men’s championship singles sheet on the noticeboard now.

Others will follow in due course, as will the revised club fours format information and entry sheet.
