GANNAWARRA Shire Council has taken the pledge to reduce its carbon footprint.
Apart from successfully advocating for the development of commercial solar technology within the municipality, council has resolved to take action to reduce its own impact on energy consumption.
Sustainability Victoria has responded to a Victorian Government pledge by implementing TAKE2 – a global “climate change pledge” program.
All State Government departments and agencies are required to cut their emissions.
Gannawarra mayor, Brian Gibson says council has taken the TAKE2 pledge, to work on reducing emissions and the plans for the future.
“The pledge included actions that we can, will or have already done to reduce climate change,” he said.
“Some of the actions that council have already done or are currently doing include changing street lighting to LED and installing solar photovoltaic on buildings that can support the technology.”
Cr Gibson said said that some goals that Gannawarra Shire Council has set to reduce climate change are reviewing renewable energy options for aquatic centres and developing or upgrading municipal waste management and resource recovery strategies.
“The seven solar farms proposed around Kerang will generate around 495 megawatts of renewable energy – enough to power over 200,000 homes,” he said.
The developments have the opportunity to set Kerang up as Victoria’s renewable energy capital, a title that could be an opportunistic mix of the key environmental aspects in the area promoting further energy developments.
Cr Gibson said that council is encouraging residents to also take the TAKE2 pledge and join the shire in helping keep the temperature rise under two degrees.
