Collision spike prompts secure livestock warning

RURAL residents in the Gannawarra Shire have been reminded to secure all livestock on their properties following several recent collisions between roaming animals and vehicles.

Council local laws officers have attended a higher number of these incidents compared to previous years.

Chief executive Geoff Rollinson said livestock seeking feed on the road reserve would easily push through or over a fence that wasn’t in good condition.

“Wandering livestock are a danger for motorists, with incidents costing time, money, and in the worst case scenario, lives,” he said.

Livestock owners were urged to ensure all fences and gates were in adequate conditions to reduce the risk of animals escaping.

“It does not matter if you are a landowner or a leasee, all rural residents who own livestock play a role in ensuring animals cannot escape from their properties,” Mr Rollinson said.

“A fine of up to $3700 and costs associated with any damage caused by wandering livestock, as well as the potential seizing of any roaming livestock, can be alleviated by checking fencing on your property is adequate.”
