POLICE say a driver is "distraught" after learning his truck hit and killed a man near Kerang on August 19.

Inspector Gerard de Vries said the Kerang man, aged in his mid-20s, was hit some time between 2.05am and 2.15am on the Murray Valley Highway at Reedy Lake, between Kerang and Lake Charm.

He was later identified as Joseph Newport.
