Plans to protect native species

AN EMERGENCY response plan is being drawn up to protect a native fish species — once thought to be extinct in Victoria — discovered at Third Reedy Lake late last year.

The discovery of the southern purple spotted gudgeon in the Kerang Lakes system made headlines in October after survey crews working on the Goulburn-Murray Connections irrigation modernisation project netted the fish.
