Quilters’ efforts rewarded

A GROUP of dedicated quilters who organise one of the district’s largest craft weekends have been recognised for their community service.

The Cohuna Cubby House Quilters are this year’s Gannawarra Shire Council Community Group of the Year, recognised for their annual Country Quilters Weekend.

A highlight of the regional arts and craft calendar for more than 10 years, the event attracts more than 100 people annually to Cohuna to take part in workshops and complete unfinished projects.

The quilting group, consisting of around 20 people, spend around 2000 hours leading up to the event organising workshop presenters, sourcing venues and promoting the weekend.

“We are all very delight to receive the award, but we don’t feel like we deserve it as we are all doing something we enjoy,” quilting group member, Pam Carmody said.

As well as its commitment to running its annual showcase, members also regularly donate items to various groups and charities.

Forty quilts were donated to last year’s Cohuna Challenge Camp, with donations also presented for babies at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

The group also donated funds to the Rotary Club of Kerang Alternative Schoolies trip last year to assist with purchasing uniforms for Cambodian children.

“Like any hobby we enjoy what we do, and we hope to continue for quite a while,” Mrs Carmody said.

Fellow Cohuna-based group, the Young at Heart singers, were also nominated for the award.
