Leagues’ domestic violence stance

THE Central Murray Football Netball League and Golden Rivers Football League are taking a stand against domestic violence.

Players from the two competitions feature in a one-minute video that premiered on YouTube last week urging all to take a stand to stop violence against women.

AFL Central Murray football development manager, Jamie Macri was inspired to develop the club after seeing a similar project run by the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League last year.

“Jamie believed that he could produce a video using local footballers and netballers to spread the message about domestic violence against women,” AFL Central Murray regional operations manager, David Alderuccio said.

“After speaking with the local police it was realised that 38 per cent of Police Victoria work is dealing with domestic violence.”

St Mary Mackillop College student, Mitchell Barkman spent a Sunday in February filming the clip, which features representatives from each CMFNL side and four GRFL clubs.

The video, shot at the Swan Hill Recreation Reserve, features Braiden Bennett (Mallee Eagles), Ben Booth (Moulamein), Kyle Brawn (Lake Boga), Mark Corrie (Tyntynder), Rick Easton (Cohuna Kangas), Shane Guerra (Koondrook/Barham), Whitney Kennedy (Mallee Eagles), Gavin Lloyd (Balranald), Ryan O’Sullivan (Tooleybuc/Manangatang), Luke O’Toole (Ultima), Tim Ruffles (Swan Hill), Jordan Simpson (Macorna), Jarrod and Gretchen Skinner (Nyah-Nyah West United), Glenn and Rachael Smith (Nullawil), Kyle Steicke (Woorinen) and Troy Thamm (Kerang).

“Every AFL Central Murray club will get a copy of the video which we would like clubs to play at trainings and during games to spread the message across our region,” Alderuccio said.

The video can be accessed here or via the AFL Central Murray Facebook page.
