Painting purple for relay cause

KERANG businesses have painted themselves purple in support of the Cancer Council’s Relay for Life.

With purple the symbolic colour of Relay for Life, local businesses were encouraged by the Central Murray (Swan Hill) Relay for Life committee to create a purple window display to help raise awareness and promote team registrations for the upcoming event.

Eleven Kerang businesses took part in the Paint the Town Purple promotion from July 11 to 16.

With so many fabulous purple displays, the committee said it was hard-pressed to pick a winner, but eventually decided on Chris and Kelvin Burt at Ooh La La Linen and Giftware in Victoria Street, while the runner-up was Kerang Embroidery.

“Chris and Kelvin have done a fantastic job at Ooh La La by creating a vibrant and attractive purple display window, which has enabled locals to access information on the Central Murray Relay For Life event being held on October 14 and 15,” committee chairman Rob Johnson said.

“We sincerely thank Ooh La La Linen and Giftware and congratulate them on winning this local awareness campaign.”

Upon hearing about Paint the Town Purple, Chris and Kelvin took the lead and planned a vibrant and interesting display that successfully caught the eye of passers-by. The display encouraged conversations about Relay for Life, helping to promote the upcoming event.

“We supported Paint the Town Purple with the hope of recruiting team members, encouraging more local people to join the Relay for Life and to create greater awareness for this Cancer Council event,” Mrs Burt said.

The couple has a very personal connection to the cause, having lost three people close to them to cancer within two months.

“It’s hit close to home, so this cause has really touched us,” Mrs Burt said.

To join this year’s event at Riverside Park in Swan Hill, phone 1300 65 65 85 or visit relayforlife.org.au.

There will also be an information night at 6.30pm on September 6 at Swan Hill Club.
