TWO men have been charged following the seizure of an alleged volatile substance and explosive device on Saturday night.
Police were flagged down by members of the public after they located a car believed to have been abandoned following a collision beside the Murray Valley Highway at Lake Boga about 11.15pm.
Police located an explosive device and a volatile substance in the car. The highway was closed while the bomb response unit travelled from Melbourne to remove the device, while the powder – believed to be drugs – was taken to Swan Hill police station.
Further examination determined that it was an unknown volatile substance and the station was evacuated about 6.15am as a precaution.
A Mystic Park man, aged 28, and a Swan Hill man, 21, were arrested in relation to the incident and have been charged with possessing an explosive.
The pair have been bailed to appear at Swan Hill Magistrates’ Court on November 22.
Police operations were conducted from Nyah before the Swan Hill police station was declared safe and reopened at about 2.30pm on Sunday.
