Library works to start

VISITORS to Gannawarra Shire Council’s largest library will be able to access books and other items tomorrow before the building closes for two weeks.

Painters and carpet layers will take over the Sir John Gorton Library from Monday as $131,000 of refurbishments occurs.

The works – the first to occur since the building opened in 2003 – will incorporate upgraded lighting options, repainting of the interior and the installation of new carpet.

“Visitors regularly compliment the look of the library, so we will be retaining nearly all of the current colour scheme,” Gannawarra Library Service manager, Kerri Sidorow said.

“The carpet will be a slightly different colour, and carpet tiles will be installed, which are easier to replace.”

Works have spent the week focusing on the library’s meeting room, exhibition space and genealogy section, before attention turns to the main section of the building.

The project will be completed in stages, with library employees moving shelving and the service’s collection of 50,000 books in sections.

New shelving will also be installed, giving the service greater flexibility to display items.

“The works will mean the building will be refreshed for the next number of years,” Mrs Siderow said.

Residents can visit the service’s other facilities at Cohuna, Leitchville and Quambatook whilst the Sir John Gorton Library is closed, with the building scheduled to re-open on Monday, October 17.
