Ready for the show

THE Kerang and District Agricultural Society will spend this weekend putting the final touches to its largest annual celebrations.

Large crowds are predicted to walk through Alexandra Park’s gates on Monday and Tuesday for the 132nd Kerang Show.

This year’s event will see traditional agricultural highlights and major attractions blend with a local theme.

In a change of tradition, the show’s opening will occur on Monday at 6.15pm, with Gannawarra Times editor and Gannawarra Shire Citizen of the Year, Ken Jenkins given the honour.

Festivities will begin early on Monday with the judging of the cereal and wool, pavilion section and blood stock classes.

The popular show jumping competition will occur throughout the day, with the dog show running adjacent to the Kerang Turf Club dining facilities.

The animal nursery, sideshow alley, face painting and Professor Wallace’s puppet show highlight the early evening events, with a new attraction – Text the Bucking Bull – available from 5.30pm for those willing to have a go.

The show society has secured a band to perform on the night, with sets to occur between 6pm and 10pm.

The pet parade will run from 6.30pm, with a motocross display (7.30pm) and the smash-up derby (8.30pm) wrapping up official proceedings on the first day.

There will be plenty of dining options available, with hot meals to be served within the Kerang Turf Club dining room and wood-fired pizzas cooking on the public lawn.

Community groups will also play their role, with the Kerang Guides offering take-away food and the Kerang Scouts overseeing the barbecue.

Many of the show’s traditional events will occur on the Tuesday, with yard dog trials and pony club competition running throughout Alexandra Park.

There will also be plenty on offer for those visiting, with face painting, Professor Wallace’s puppet show and motocross demonstrations leading up to the judging of the Kerang Show Teenager and subsequent sections at 12.45pm.

The show office is still accepting entries for events, and will be open from 10am to 4pm today.
