DEFENDING Golden Rivers Football League premiers, Murrabit remain in contention for the finals following a 10-point win against Ultima.
In what was the Blues’ first win at the Ultima Recreation Reserve in two years, Justin McConnell (five goals) and Bryden Morison took advantage of the hosts’ inaccuracy.
Murrabit held a three-point lead at quarter time, which increased to 10 points at the main break on the back of Ultima’s performance of three goals from 13 scoring shots.
The ‘Roos reduced the deficit to six points at the final break, but the damage had been done.
Callan Farrell and Alex Kirby kicked two goals each, with the hosts only managing six goals from 26 scoring shots.
Morison and McConnell were best on ground for the Blues, with Brenton Pay and Mitchell Seton-Stewart standing out for the hosts.
The Blues will travel to Wakool this weekend, with Ultima to have the bye.
Bombers’ benefits continue
FOR the second weekend in a row, Wandella benefited from other results, moving one win clear at the top of the ladder following a 59-point win against Quambatook.
In what was a clinical performance in front of goal, the Bombers kicked 18 goals from 21 scoring shots – nine more opportunities than the hosts – to produce a 10th win of the season.
The loss leaves Quambatook three wins outside the top four with five games remaining – a period that will see the Saints play three teams above the club on the ladder.
Wandella led by 24 points at quarter time, which Quambatook reduced to 21 points at the main break.
The Bombers secured the win in the third term, kicking five goals to one to hold a 47-point lead, before kicking three of the final four goals of the match.
Justin Robinson kicked four goals for the victors, with Callaghan Gray, Paul Grayling and Sam Sperling chipping in with three goals each.
Four Saint players kicked goals during the match, with Nathan Alty (three goals) leading the way.
Tim Robinson and Clinton Cummins were best on ground for the Bombers, with Chris Kendall and Jason Linke playing well for the Saints.
Wandella will host Hay this weekend in a match that will define the finals chances of the top five teams, with Quambatook to host Macorna.
Swans on song
MOULAMEIN is on track to record its best season since 2011, defeating Macorna by 20 points.
In what was the Swans’ first home win against the Tigers in six years, the hosts had to hold on in the final quarter as Macorna produced a last quarter fightback.
Led by a seven-goal effort from Pat Caldwell, Moulamein opened up a 20-point lead at quarter time, which extended to 29 points at the main break.
The Swans all but had their third win of the season secured at three-quarter time, thanks to a 36-point lead, but inaccurate kicking allowed Macorna to get back into the game.
Macorna kicked six goals from 10 scoring shots in the final quarter – out scoring Moulamein, which amassed three goals and six behinds in the same period – to finish the match on a positive note.
Daniel Edwards kicked six goals for Macorna, with Lachlan Allison (five goals) also dominating in front of goal.
Tom Isma and Brad Shepherd were best on ground for the Swans, with Jessi Lampi and Joel Dwyer standing out for Macorna.
Moulamein will host Nullawil this weekend, with the Tigers to travel to Quambatook.
Maroons run rampant
NULLAWIL is in the box seat to claim a top-two spot on the ladder following the largest win of the season.
The Maroons restricted Wakool to three behinds – all scored in the final quarter – in a 207-point win.
The hosts amassed 31 goals – led by Ben Sheridan (six goals), Andrew Oberdorfer (five goals) and Matt Harrop (five goals) – to increase their percentage to 218.95 per cent.
With competition leaders, Wandella and Ultima to still observe byes before the finals, Nullawil is well placed to move into the top two before August 19.
The loss was the third time this season the Hawks conceded more than 200 points and is the first time since the Maroons’ 121-point win against Moulamein in round 11, 2015 that a team has been held goalless.
Jake Maher, Rhys Thompson and Grant Ford were best on ground for Nullawil, with Joe Thompson and Ben Edwards playing well for Wakool.
The Maroons will travel Moulamein this weekend, with the Hawks to host defending premiers, Murrabit.
