State’s best

A DEBUT appearance at Monday’s School Sports Victoria State Secondary Athletics Championship paid off for Kerang teenager, Cameron Heffer.

The Kerang Technical High School student claimed the 16-year-old boys javelin title at the meet, beating seven other regional champions to the honour.

Despite not training for the event, the 16-year-old’s 43-metre throw was good enough to earn him gold at the final, held at Albert Park.

“I was a little bit shocked to win,” he said

“I went down to Melbourne not thinking I was going to win.”

The win capped a clean sweep of titles for Heffer, who won gold at school, zone and regional level – all without any prior preparation for either competition.

Unless he is invited to travel to Canada as part of a School Sports Victoria contingent, the next time Heffer will pick up a javelin will be at next year’s high school athletics titles.

“I will try to defend my title,” he said.
