Across the greens – Cohuna Golf

Cohuna Golf

BACK to some sort of normality this past week, here’s hoping for more of the same until our pennant season is finished.

Ladies’ day was held on Tuesday, with triples again the game of choice. Winners were the combination of Rhonda, Val and June, two in a row for Rhonda.

Midweek pennant got off to a damp start at Kerang, but cleared to enable play without interruption. The rinks of Peter and Pat had excellent victories, with Yvonne just missing out. This further consolidates a position in the four with three rounds to go.

The twos did not fare quite as well, overshadowed by a strong Barham side, but gave their best efforts throughout the day, without much reward.

Wednesday night began in bright conditions, but as all could attest, turned really cold by the end of the night. All players battled on manfully, with Dave McNamara, Ruff Farrant and Mal Appleby claiming the evening’s trophies in a strong performance.

Our Thursday pairs resumed with a large field thanks to our Gunbower supporters and a couple of new faces. The best of the two game winners were Peter Coates and Linda McManus, while Cheryle Baker and Ian Morrison scored the repechage voucher.

Although we’ll celebrate Australia Day this week, the bowls will continue as the afternoon is free for most people.

Saturday pennant was a 50 per cent success story, with divisions 1 and 2/2 both winning well. The ones travelled down to Gunbower as did the Gunny Golfers, to win on all three rinks. A strong home side performance flagged considerably in the latter half of the game, with our rinks all finishing strongly.

Not so lucky were Division 3, meeting top dogs Barham, who took them to the cleaners. Best on the day, and Bower Voucher winners were Linda McManus, Ian Morrison, Irene Trezise and Noelene Brown.

The Whites were the sole side at home and defeated Pyramid Hill on all rinks after a couple of pretty tight matches. Jason Heard set the pace with a big win over Marie Scott, backed up by Pat Quinn (+6) and Yvonne Eckhardt (+2).

Navy went over to Kerang and between absences and a strong opposition were fairly harshly dealt with. Up against our own clubmates this week should make for an interesting afternoon.

On Monday night we staged our final night tournament, the Cohuna Car Sales Triples with a full field of 14. Results in next week’s edition.

Entries close with the secretary this weekend for the Northern District triples, played this year at Wakool on February 5. Sections are for both men and ladies.
