Across the Greens – Kerang

THE Athol Stephen Triples concluded last Tuesday with top players enjoying our great greens over the two days.

After seven games it was the Murray Downs team of Buc Lehman, Spruiker Cahoon and John Alderuccio standing alone with seven wins.

Rick Parr of Cohuna and his friends from Castlemaine took second prize on shots up over Barry Brennan’s team from Moama with six wins and a tie.

Well done to all players for staying the distance and to all our members for the hard work which ensured the success of the tournament. It was great to have Athol come down from Glenarm for lunch to catch up with old friends.

We have divisions 1 and 2 in the Midweek Pennant finals which begin tomorrow at Barham.

Congratulations to our Division 2 and Division 3 teams for progressing to the next stage in their respective finals.

Division 2 had a titanic battle with Cohuna Golf and came out with a fighting two-shot win, thus progressing to the grand final currently programmed for Saturday week.

Lindsay Hein’s team, after leading early, was finally beaten by David Orr 16-26, but importantly hung on to get the team over the line on overall shots.

Som Pascoe had an epic encounter with Jason Heard and lost by just two shots, 20-22.

Eddie Fenton’s team proved to be the difference between the two teams and was too good for Colin Black and comfortably won 29-15. In the end, Kerang hung on to win 65 shots to 63.

Division 3 had an equally hard time of it against Wakool. The overall shots tally see-sawed all day and Kerang did just enough to prevail on the day, 55-48.

Murray Sutherland’s team struggled against Robert Grant. Once again Murray skipped well and saved Kerang on two or three occasions from potentially damaging ends, only going down by seven shots which in the end was critical. Score was 12-19.

Helen McBain started slowly against Rod Chalmers and ended up with an epic game with a great come-back win by just one shot. Characterised by a great shot from lead bowler Barb Williams on end 20 who followed the kitty into the ditch, which effectively won the end for the team and was enough to get the team through with one end to go. Score was 17-16.

Jo Adams’ team was too good for Kerri Lolicato and led all day, finally finishing 26-13, and were clearly the difference between the teams.

The Northern District Champion of Champions were held in blustery conditions at Kerang on Sunday. Jason Wilson played a thrilling game to go down 24-25 against Gary Easton from Cohuna Golf. The semi-finals and final will be played at Kerang next Sunday when Barbara Williams will play her first game.

Congratulations to Chelsea Fisher, Raelene Peel and Ashley Peel losing only two of 16 ends to win the meat hampers on Thursday night, well done!
