Cohuna

MELBOURNE Cup day was celebrated in style by a great crowd of bowlers last Tuesday.

The sweep’s winners were well spread. Bowls winners on the day were Mary Meredith, Peter Van der Zande and Marian Smith.

Wednesday’s midweek pennant results were not what we’d hoped for, with all teams going down.

In Division 1, Pyramid Hill1 d Cohuna1 10/71 to 2/70. Cohuna 2 went down to Kerang 1 9/80 to 3/69.

In Division 2, Cohuna Golf 2 d Cohuna 3 8/48 to 2/38.

Saturday’s pennant results held very little joy either, with only Division 2 getting a narrow win over Barham 3, 8/74 to 4/72.

In Division 1, Wakool 1 10/77 d Cohuna 1 2/61. In Division 3, Cohuna 3 had a bye, and Cohuna 4 went down to Kerang Golf 3 12/79 to 0/58.

Hopefully, some of last year’s form will start to reappear as the season progresses.

Kerang

CUP day was attended by many and everyone, enjoying a great social day, sharing a meal together, playing bowls and watching the Cup, cheering on their horses.

Congratulations to the winners of the bowls: Ross Frantz, Daryl Hall and Peter Basile. Runners-up were Frank Ritchie, Marilyn Theobald and Don Jenkins.

Thank you to Helen, Barb and Gayle for organising the bowls teams, and to Jacqui and her team of helpers for the organisation of the food.

Many thanks to members who donated raffles and helped with the food, to Lorraine Adams for all her work in organising the sweeps and a big thanks to everyone for making the day such a success.

Congratulations to Kevin, Claire, Tunna, Marilyn, Barry, Jacqui and Bob who were the winners of the raffles.

Midweek pennant Division 1: Kerang 1 80 d Cohuna 2 69.

Skip Kim had a very close game catching Cohuna on the 23rd end. Going into the last end, Cohuna were up by one with Kerang winning the last end making the score 22 shots each.

Skip Kevin’s team won by 14 shots. They were steadily pegging Cohuna back, and on the 15th end they took the lead 14-12.

The 16th end put the icing on the cake with eight shots up allowing Kerang to have a good lead, however Cohuna didn’t give up and, on the 20th, end they scored a six. It was 25-19. Kerang went on to win 33-19.

Skip Trevor’s team had a close game with Cohuna leading until the 20th end when Kerang scored five shots making the score 23-21.

However, Cohuna continued to win ends and finally Kerang lost 25-28. Well done to all players.

In Division 2, Kerang 2 44 d Barham 2 38.

Despite Barham scoring a six on the first end, skip Marilyn’s team tried their best but couldn’t quite make up the deficit and lost 19-22.

Jacqui’s team led all day until Barham drew on the 19th end. Kerang continued to play well with a five on the 21st end and continued to win the mat until the end of the game. Well done and thank you Barham for a great day of bowling.

There will be no midweek pennant this week due to the country carnival.

Last Friday, Gayle and Denise went to Northaven to take carpet bowls for the residents. It was wonderful to see everyone having a go and enjoying the morning. Former members of our club Betty, Ray, Linleigh and Alan haven’t lost their touch, they drew to the kitty many times. Well done everyone.

Our gala day on Friday, November 24 is fast approaching please put your teams in to Helen McBain or Barb Williams by 4pm on November 23 and support our day.

Please add to your calendar our Christmas party on Saturday, December 16.

Another blustery day met the Kerang bowls teams at each of the away venues.

Kerang 1 were away to Leitchville and had a win to consolidate their position inside the top four by 54 shots with a three-rink win.

Team Pocock had a tussle with Ken Dehne to prevail by eight shots while team Hancock got over Opie by 19.

The other rink had a runaway win with a 40-11 scoreline which really does the “stand-in” skipper no chance of relinquishing his role for the rest of the season. With an average winning margin of 20-plus shots, he could well be the form skipper in the region.

Kerang 2 went down to the Pyramid Hill combination by a margin of six shots on their greens. Even though teams Pascoe and Hein succeeded in their respective rinks, team Frantz suffered a rare loss by 16 shots after giving a huge start. They did well to level the game after getting on the board but for the overall team score, the damage was a little too much to overcome.

Kerang 3 also headed over to Pyramid Hill to take on all comers. With a late withdrawal, Team McBain battled valiantly to go down by three shots in a game of six versus eight bowls.

Team Teasdale countered for the black ducks with a two-shot win and then in walks team Coobs with another double digit win to the tune of 18 shots to gain the points. The total margin was in favour of Kerang 3 by 17 shots.

Kerang 4 ventured over the border in Barham. Unfortunately, Kerang 4 was handed a little bit of a touch-up going down by 47 shots, with team Adams getting the only point with a 24-all draw.

Teams Frantz and Theobald toiled away for not a lot of reward. Bad luck team and better luck next week.

Good luck to our club representatives in this week’s northern carnival which Kerang are hosting from Monday to Thursday. So, if you’re not doing a lot, come on down and enjoy some great atmosphere at some very good facilities.

Club events are still short of numbers so please consider entering. The teams were selected Saturday night but as usual may change after the time of print.

Kerang 1 v Gunbower 1 at home: Hancock (s), Murray, Brown, Kerry Watts. Sheriff (s), K Teasdale, Kim Watts, Fagg (mgr). Pocock (s) Hamon, Jackson, Monaghan.

Both are playing very well at the moment and are very worthy club championship final participants. This will be played Sunday, November 19.

Kerang Golf

ALL Kerang Golf teams played away from home on Saturday, with Division 1 heading over to Barham to tackle the preseason premiership favourites.

Playing under the dome the home side were able to take advantage of the home ground, beating both divisions 1 and 2.

Division 1 results: Howard McClelland lost to Jason Lunghusen. Frank Ritchie lost to Brody Harker. Graeme Hayes lost to Glen Faul.

Division 2 results: Laurie Gray lost to Cristopher Hope. Carol Pay lost to Kenneth Ashton. Ron McKerrow lost to Victor Kendall.

Division 3 went to Cohuna to tackle Cohuna 4, and they had a much better result with all rinks up: Gary Borg d Geoff McIvor 21-19. Judy McKerrow d 26-23. Noel Robertson d Ian Mathers 31-16.

Social bowls on Thursdays had 16 players enjoying a game of three-bowl pairs.

Winners of the day were Ron McKerrow and Craig Hicks and runners-up were Ken Pay and Dale Spinks.

The encouragement award to Sonia McLeish and Dave Wood.

The midweek team also travelled to Barham last Wednesday and again won on Lorraine Ritchie’s rink by one shot, but Rosie Laughlin’s team had a 14 shot loss, so a scoreline of 53/40.

This team is still in the top four, but there are at least two teams breathing down their necks.

Twilight Triples continued their season with the fourth round being played last Wednesday evening.

The weather looked threatening when a start was made, and after 10 ends, the lightning led to thunder, then the rain came.

A result was obtained from the 10 completed ends and the winners of the Choice Cut Butchers vouchers were Robert Taylor, Rob Fabry and Wayne O’Neill with 28 points.

In second place was the consistent Gray, Lynch and Wilson team with 27 points.

The chocolates to the Golfers, led by Karyl Hewitt, who was captain as Jack was busy.

She was assisted by Doug Meehan and Neil Paul. Gray, Lynch and Wilson are the ladder leaders with 115 points, followed by Lions with 93, team JTS on 91 and Royal Hotel, McAndo and Deadlies-Ian all on 89.

A great tussle at the other end of the ladder, with Hirdy’s Buslines, The Golfers and Stace’s Mob all looking potential wooden spooners.

The annual Christmas wheelbarrow competition has again been expertly organised by Carol and Ken Pay, with books handed out to all members and a roster drawn up for tickets to be sold at IGA or the National Bank.

Our CluBarham Star Day Tournament is fast approaching, so get your teams organised.
