Cohuna claims bowls crowns

COHUNA Golf Bowls Club has added another two titles to the honour boards, after claiming victory in Divisions 1 and 2 in Saturday’s Northern District grand finals.

It became a big day for Cohuna Golf bowlers as they claimed both titles on offer.

The Division 1 victory against Kerang Golf was probably no surprise, but for their Division 2 side to crush the highly rated Barham combination by some 40 shots was a boilover.

There was some recompense for Barham with their Division 3 side defeating Kerang after a dour struggle.

As the Division 1 match entered the final ends, Kerang Golf supporters were wondering whether the previous week’s heroics would be seen again.

Alas, with the Hammond and Keely rinks well ahead, ( +19 and +11), the result was assured, even though Frank Ritchie, in a brilliant personal effort, guided his rink to a four-shot victory over Bluey Fletcher.

The depth and evenness of all three Cohuna Golf rinks sets a standard that at present other teams cannot match. They now go on to play for the regional titles at Euston in March.

After the first few ends of the Division 2 final, it was becoming obvious that the Barham players were having problems adjusting to the very pacey Cohuna green.

All Golf sides raced to early leads, maintaining them until match end, the final margin being a staggering 41 shots.

The experience of Golf players Trezise, Easton, Mathers and Morrison to list a few was very evident, whilst new addition Noelene Brown impressed all with her draw bowling.

For Barham, the result was not an indication of the very successful year they’ve had, but when the season finished without a flag, they are entitled to be disappointed.

The Division 3 clash between Kerang and Barham saw the semi-final results reversed, with Barham this time taking the honours.

With Graeme Goodwin’s rink enjoying a sizeable 40-14 win, the margin covered Ken Lake’s loss to Mick Coobs of Kerang by 16.

The three-shot margin gained by Garry Wishart in the final match assured Barham of a well-earned victory.

The standard of bowls at this level has rapidly improved over the past couple of seasons, and this match on Saturday was great entertainment for the many supporters present from both clubs.
