Demons still on top

ROUND 10 offered some interesting one-day results in the men’s A Grade cricket series, the biggest surprise being a comfortable win to St Mary’s Tyntynder in their match against second-placed Woorinen on the Tigers’ home turf.

In Koondrook, there were no shortcuts for RSL as they as they tried to limit Barham Koondrook’s run chase, managing to do so by bowling them out after 43.3 overs.

In the game of the round, Nyah District was able to chase down Wandella at Riverside Park, after a shaky start was followed by Dean Harrop going on to excel with the bat.

Wandella v Nyah District

NYAH District asserted its dominance in the A Grade cricket, despite Wandella setting a formidable batting total for them to chase.

The Demons took victory with 6/150 after 38.3 overs, comfortably downing the Bombers’ 10/148 challenge.

A mammoth batting effort from Dean Harrop, 74 not out, helped steer Nyah District to victory.

Wandella won the toss and elected to bat with openers Daniel Higgs and Samuel Copland heading to the crease.

But Joel Walsh made short work of Higgs’ time at the crease, bowling him out for a golden duck.

Copland’s wicket feel soon after, bowled out for two runs off the bowling of Ben Shadbolt.

Despite the shaky start, Wandella was able to find its groove from the partnership of Peter Moore and Flynn McKnight.

Both batsmen settled in for 10 overs and a 77-run partnership with Moore smacking a six and four fours in his 40-run contribution.

He was eventually caught by Ethan Curran off the bowling of Shadbolt and incoming batsman Nicholas Oliver faced the same fate eight balls later, exiting for one run after being caught by Walsh off the bowling of Shadbolt.

McKnight found new support in Luke Murray who added a further 26 runs to the Bombers’ effort until both batsmen were caught off the bowling of Cooper Andrews.

Tail ender Ryan Barnes gave his side the only other double-digit score with 16 while the reminder of the batting order failed to make a significant impact.

After 45.3 overs, Wandella was dismissed from the crease and took the field in a bid to limit the visiting Demons’ run rate.

Charlie Boulton and Mitchell Grinham opened Nyah District’s account, but Moore proved as dangerous with the ball as he had been at the crease.

He dismissed Boulton LBW after 12 balls and four runs, and Grinham’s wicket feel after 21 balls, caught by Daniel Higgs off the bowling of Moore for nine runs.

Incoming Jacob Lister was dismissed for a golden duck, another victim of Moore’s bowling, and the Bombers were on track to defend their total.

But the partnership of Walsh and Harrop soon set the Demons on track with Harrop achieving his 74-run innings in 81 balls.

He found the boundary 14 times to rack up 13 fours and one six, and Joel Walsh contributed 17 runs until bowled out, again by Moore who finished the innings with four wickets.

Justin Toomey settled the side with a 16-run effort before being caught by McKnight from the bowling of Barnes, and Ben Sheridan saw the side home alongside Harrop with 13 not out.

The win shored up Nyah District’s position at the top of the ladder with seven wins and two losses for the season.

Wandella remain in fourth place on the ladder, equal with Ultima TUF who had the bye and just pip them on percentage.

Barham Koondrook v RSL

BARHAM Koondrook won the toss in their match up against RSL and elected to bowl.

Stuart Patterson and Todd Day-Henery made the biggest impact with the bat for RSL, scoring 33 and 41 runs respectively.

Beyond that, it was an all-side effort at the crease aside from Paul Munro who was dismissed LBW for a duck off the bowling of Gary Lolicato.

In the field, Chameera Akurugoda was dangerous for BKCC, claiming three of the first four wickets, but it was Joel Davidson who did the most damage with the ball, claiming five wickets.

At the end of the first innings, RSL posted a total of 9/154 after 50 overs.

Coming in to bat, BKCC lost the early wicket of Joel Davidson, but Lance Davidson (36) and Warren Lolicato (42) hooked in for a 78-run partnership.

Lance eventually lost his wicket after a catch off the bowling of Samuel Brown and Warren was caught off the bowling of Patterson.

Lachlan Laursen came in midway through the order and managed 31 runs off 45 balls to push his side closer to victory.

He was dismissed off the bowling of Brown and BKCC was unable to complete the job, going down all out for 143.

In the field, Patterson and Brown were blistering, with Brown claiming six scalps and Patterson three.

Woorinen v St Mary’s Tyntynder

WOORINEN fell short of expectations on their home ground, with the side going down to bottom-placed St Mary’s Tyntynder.

The Bulldogs won the toss and elected to bat and set about creating a solid innings from the opening partnership of Ayden Symons (10 runs from 22 balls) and Austin McKerrow (44 runs from 98 balls).

Corey Daniels (21 runs from 26 balls) and Robin Sebastian (20 runs from 18 balls) also contributed to the side’s successful stint at the crease.

Gurmander Singh was impressive with five wickets and the side looked well placed having bowled The Bulldogs out 10/115 after 40.5 overs.

The Tigers opened their run account well, with opening batsman Dean Morphew and Jackson Hughes settling in, but once Morpeth’s wicket was lost off the bowling of Corey Daniels, Woorinen’s day faded.

Hughes put in a mammoth innings at the crease, facing 70 balls but was only able to accumulate 17 runs for his effort.

The mid and tail order succumbed fairly quickly to the bowling of Nathanial Holmes-Brown (five wickets) and Sebastian (three wickets).

The Bulldogs took victory after just 30.1 overs and held the Tigers to a total of 74 runs.
