Culgoa braces for Tyrrell Creek peak

A MODERATE flood watch and act alert has been issued for the Culgoa township and surrounding areas as floodwater levels continue to rise along Tyrrell Creek.

Residents are being urged to prepare for potential flooding and isolation as the creek continues to rise.

Leigh and Marty Schoonderwoerd, of the Kaneira Hotel, have been monitoring the situation closely.

“The water is gushing through quite fast,” Ms Schoonderwoerd said, but the community remained optimistic.

With water over the road, heading towards Sea Lake, Ultima and Wycheproof, Lalbert township was still accessible.

“We’re just sitting and waiting at this stage,” Ms Schoonderwoerd said, noting the creek was set to peak on Friday.

Owner and operator of the Mallee Bunker Cafe, Tim Grenda, agreed.

“The water is holding pretty steady at the moment,” he said.

Mr Grenda said the town was well supported by the CFA, SES and Buloke Shire Council, which was continuing to monitor the situation.
